Norwegian Masters 2nd. Edition 2006
| Rachael McEnaney
(Masters In Line) |
Well ladies and
jelly spoons, The 2nd annual
Norwegian Masters event is over where there were
debates about Norwegian versus British beer, 2
metres of snow (no I’m not exaggerating),
gourmet food and its price here in Norway, the
power of denial through your index finger, more
snow, and oh yeah there was some dancing and a
competition too. The Norwegian
Masters 2006 started for the Masters in the ever
more familiar Manchester airport, although these
days Rob is trying to list the things on one
hand that he finds familiar. (Yes that does
include his Sat Nav and also Paul’s hairstyle).
Rachael once more
set off the security alarm with her fantastic
choice of attire, metal belt, metal buckle, lots
of jewellery, metal buckled boots, metal
handcuffs..(Yeah nice thinking guys!)
After an
uneventful flight where Rachael nabbed a whole
row to herself, Rob pretended to read the
newspapers and Paul slept. Upon arriving in
Norway the masters were informed that Norway was
covered in 2 METRES! of snow and it hadn’t been
this bad since 1960, Rob began to recall his
memories of 1960 where his name was Rock
moonshine Flower and he had a big hairdo,
actually just when he had hair. The masters
headed for the hotel, which was a very
convenient 10 minutes away from the airport. After a few beers,
the usual routine of unpacking for Rachael and
the – tip the suitcase upside down on the floor
technique for Paul and Rob, The masters called
an early night.
Paul and Rob
surfed the local T.V stations for football and
music and ended up watching a soppy film, which
neither of them will admit to crying over. It
was the dust in their eyes.
Everyone woke up
in the morning, which is a good thing, and
headed downstairs for breakfast and to check out
the ballroom. Cato Larsen and his extremely well
drilled team of volunteers were at hand already
setting up the floor and the stage. After a typical
day of setting up everything and running through
demos, it was time to open the doors to a very
eager Norwegian group of line dancers. Cato began Djing
with a play list that had been posted around the
room so everyone could see what was up and
coming and Paul and Rob could see when to head
to the bar for a beer tasting session and
Rachael could powder her nose. The masters were
foiled by this plan though as Cato began playing
requests in between the play list dances which
threw a spanner in their plan on more than one
occasion. Actually many a time Rob and Paul were
caught with a beer in their hands, when a
master’s dance came on and Rachael was
pretending to drink something pretending to be
water. Rachael and Rob
proceeded to teach workshops of the newest
Masters dances and the audience greatly approved
requesting both dances many more times that
night. Soon enough it was
demo time and the Masters performed their Matrix
routine, just ask Rob about resorting to the
rabbits! Paul performed his
routine with the spirit of the tree running
through him and Rachael was a bit fantastic and
Rob was a dude. The audience
laughed, cried and applauded and that was just
at Rachael’s stretching routine.
Everyone partied
till 1am with the exception of wimp boy Paul who
sneaked off 30 minutes early to retire to bed,
lightweight.
Saturday morning
was soon upon everyone and Paul actually made it
up for breakfast, which is the first time at a
line dance event since the last time. Rachael actually
just made it up in time, and Rob had his healthy
breakfast of coffee and Gaviscon, (which
according to my sources, are Robs new major
investment in the stock market). The day started
with muchas dancing and workshops, with Paul
teaching Hoe Yau Ying, or was that what they
ordered for takeaway last night? Rob taught ticket
to heaven, Rachael taught End of the Road, and
Paul taught careless whisper, all of which went
down extremely well with the dancers whose
numbers seemed to have grown quite a lot since
the Friday night. There was a break
for dinner and to get dressed up in suits and
dresses, which the Masters happened to have not
read about. Rachael managed to look pretty good,
Rob wore his demo outfit and Paul wore his
judging outfit. You can’t say they aren’t
resourceful. Demo time was once
again upon them rather abruptly as Paul nearly
dropped his bottle of spitfire, (I said nearly!),
to run upstairs and get his demo outfit. They then
performed their seven sins routine, which was
extremely well received, especially as Rachael
added a new section to her solo, which was
fantastic, Rob and Paul add new sections every
week, though not always intentionally. It was then
unofficially beer sampling time with Britain’s
spitfire up against Norway’s hansa, the winner
was the Norwegian beer hansa down. Nothing to do
with the taste though but it was about 2 quid
cheaper.
After not too many
beers and many more social dances it was Robs
turn to head to zed land early as the hansa took
its toll. Rachael and Paul stayed till the last
song and then fatigue took over from holding
those 10-pound spitfires all night and bed
called.
Sunday morning
arrived way too early, as both Rob and Paul were
red eyed and weary. (They claim they hadn’t
watched a second sloppy movie though) The competition
was soon underway with Rob emceeing and judging
and generally pronouncing everyone’s name wrong. The Norwegian
masters competition was fantastic and very well
supported as competitors and their families
flocked from all over Europe, including Norway,
Sweden, Denmark, Scotland and Finland. The
support and cheering was brilliant throughout
the day as competitors put in some great
performances. Rob taught a
workshop in between heats and after some social
dancing, the awards were ready to go. Although
not after Paul tripped up big style and fell off
the stage and onto the floor behind the
speakers, but with Paul’s luck no one saw, so
therefore we feel justified telling the hundreds
of people who read this, all about it. The awards went
incredibly smooth with Rachael doing a very
professional job of pronouncing names, only
needing to be corrected once or twice. Everyone
got a fantastic reception and the queue to take
photographs was nearly as long as the one at the
bar the night before, apparently. After the thanks
had been said, everyone left for home and other
destinations, Cato’s team of fantastic
volunteers stripped down the room as the masters
packed their own stuff. After saying their
goodbyes, it was time to leave and set off to
other destinations, Rachael heading home, Paul
heading home for the first time in a couple of
weeks and Rob intending to head home but knowing
his directional sense he could be going via
Bristol.
I kid you not,
this is a fantastic event, full of party
animals, dance fanatics and snow.
If you are
looking for a line dance event that plays it
safe and by the rules, don’t come here, if you
are looking for a great laugh with fantastic
people and lots of dancing and snow, then the
Norwegian Masters 2007 should be your next
destination! |
Norwegian Masters 1st. edition 2004:
| Rachael McEnaney
(Masters In Line) |
The events are now
coming in thick and fast, and if you missed out on
in Norway with the Masters this year then make it
one of your "must do " events next year.
As the masters will agree, the Newly-born Norwegian
Masters event is a no holds barred party from start
to finish.
The Masters arrived in Oslo on friday morning and
were taken to the venue via some heavy snow and
freezing temperatures, although Paul testifies that
t-shirts are worn in Newcastle when its that cold.
To say the hotel was beautiful would be an
understatement, this place oozed class and
sophistication, from the minute the Masters arrived
they knew it was going to be a special event.
The night time kicked off and Rob, Paul, Rachael and
Pedro were joined by the ever enthusiastic Tom
Mickers to welcome the eager dancers into the very
cosy dance ballroom. Everything ran on time and the
organisation was superb all down to the brilliant
Cato Larsen and his hard working commitee. Cato also
deejaying, played an excellent rotation of beginner
through to advanced dances with lots of floorsplits
to accommodate all. The dancers were really enjoying
it and you could feel the atmosphere building, this
was going to be a great weekend.
Alas!, things were going too well!, so therefore
after Rob had taught the very catchy Rat Pack dance,
the dance floor decided to get in on the action and
started moving along the floor in a manner so smooth,
Toms selling techniques didnt compare.
So therefore during Paul and Pedros teach of Beat it
up, the dance floor doctors, (yes including man of
many talents, Machado) went to work on the floor.
The teach therefore became very interesting,
nevertheless Paul pushed through the dance as Pedro
had everyone in stitches.
Tom then went on and taught a very funky dance
choreographed by Guyton Mundy called "Sum, Sum".
Demo time came and Tom performed his beautiful dance
speechless for an awe struck audience, the masters
then came out and performed their flight routine
with an air stewardess missing the use of her arm.
Rachael had injured the ligaments in her elbow
previously that week. So therefore the guys took
full advantage of taking the mick with one arm poses
all around. The Norwegians said they had never seen
anything like it before, the masters would have to
agree!
Saturday morning arrived & the Norwegian crowd were
very keen to start dancing again. Djs Cato and
Morten took turns to please the crowd with a
playlist that had been placed around the room so
everyone could see what was up next.
The day was filled with workshops including Rachaels
new fun dance "Mars Attacks", Tom taught Judy
Mcdonalds new Irish dance called "Dipstick" and the
Masters new dance "Cheetah" to the new Michael
Jackson track.
The room was full of enthusiasm and the will to
learn more, and with dancers from Norway, Sweden,
France, Holland and Finland the atmosphere was
always friendly. There was then a quick break for
Dinner which was an amazing display of a massive
selection of foods which looked too good too eat.
The saturday night started where saturday afternoon
finished off with the room completely full and lots
of Santa Clauses popping up every now and again! The
workshop dances were played and everyone was having
a really good time, then along came demo time with
Tom performing his mesmerising medley and losing
some items of clothing with it, not that the ladies
were complaining though.
The masters performed their jailhouse routine and
Rachael bravely did her solo even though she was in
a lot of pain, a few touches of clever choreography
from the team and they all made it unscathed. The
audience gave a standing ovation for both
performances and the party continued.
Sunday morning arrived and too early for some, as
clearly the nightclub next door had taken its toll.
The competition started and ran very smooth minus
some dodgy pronunciations of Norwegian names from
Mc-Adam. The level of competition was very high, but
also everyone was having a good time on the floor.
The awards ran on time and an anticipating audience
cheered their competitors as they stepped up on
stage to recieve their rewards.
Then it was time to say goodbye as the Masters had
an evening flight out, they were however swamped
with great comments about the event which had
clearly been a success.
So if you want a party that never stops, regardless
of night or day, Norwegian Masters is the event for
you, cos they do it the Nor-way!! |

| Tusen takk for ei kjempe kul helg. Utrolig bra
arrangement! Vi forstår at det ligger mye arbeid bak
slike happenings. Til tross for de uforutsette
problemene dere fikk underveis ble arrangementet
gjennomført med stil! Godt jobbet alle sammen og stå
på videre! Vi gleder oss til neste års Norwegian
Masters in Line event… |

(Nesset Linedance Club) |
Tusen takk for ei
kjempehelg på Masters in Line!!!!
arrangement i Norge allerede!
God Jul til alle sammen!! |

helgen..

Tusen takk til deg og
dine medhjelpere for et fantastisk arrangement i
helga! The
strekk!! :-)
Gratulerer med et strålende arrangement!!! |
| Sadiah Heggernes (Loose
Boots, Hof i Vestfold) |
Hei Cato,
Vil bare
takke deg for en kjempe arrangement i helgen! Loose
you did it!!

| Turid Evang (Våler
Linedance) |
Takk for en fin
helg med masters in line. Vi fra Våler koste oss
og hadde det gøy. Vi likte veldig godt måten det
var lagt opp på og at alt var greit og
oversiktlig. Det var imponerende å se hvordan
det ble aviklet uten problemer. Vi har jo ikke
akkurat den erfaringen fra UCWDC |
